and Wellbeing

Empowering SEW African women and girls in North London through culturally and spiritually informed support that promotes safety, healing, and long‑term mental wellbeing

MISSION STATEMENT

Mental Health Hut is a registered Community Interest Company (CIC) supporting Southern, Eastern and Western (SEW) African women and girls living in North London. We provide culturally informed advice, advocacy, and counselling for those experiencing, or at risk of, domestic abuse, culture based abuse, and bullying, with a focus on preventing mental health decline and promoting long term wellbeing.
Our work is holistic and trauma informed, recognising how spirituality, culture, migration, family dynamics, and systemic barriers shape the experiences of African women and girls in the UK. We address each person’s full biopsychosocial context to ensure support is relevant, respectful and intersectionally aware.
We provide a safe, welcoming, “village style” space where women and girls of all ages can speak openly without judgement. Our services are offered in Shona, Ndebele, and English, with interpreting available to ensure everyone can communicate comfortably. Alongside direct support, we train professionals across statutory and voluntary sectors to deepen their understanding of the specific forms of abuse affecting SEW African women and girls. We also advocate for stronger laws, policies, and safeguarding practices to better protect and uphold the rights of women and girls.
